You need three things: voice or video chat (Discord, Zoom), a way to roll and show results (a VTT's dice or a shared online roller), and character sheets everyone can see. Add a virtual tabletop like Roll20, Foundry VTT or Owlbear Rodeo for maps, and share ambience through your call.
Option 1: Theater of the mind (simplest)
- Voice: Discord, Zoom, Google Meet or any group call.
- Dice: everyone rolls physical dice honestly, or uses a shared roller. Our online dice roller can share a link to any roll.
- Sheets: PDFs or the character sheet creator exported as PDF.
Great for story-heavy games and quick setup.
Option 2: A virtual tabletop
A VTT adds shared maps, tokens and built-in dice:
| VTT | Good for |
|---|---|
| Roll20 | Browser-based, big community, many system sheets. Compare |
| Foundry VTT | Deep automation and modules, self-hosted, one-time license. Compare |
| Owlbear Rodeo | Fast and simple maps, extensions for dice and more. Compare |
Sound for online games
Play ambience and music from your computer and share system audio in your call. The free online RPG soundboard runs in a browser tab; keep effects occasional so they don't clash with voices.
Tips for great remote sessions
- Use headphones to avoid echo.
- Mute when not talking in large groups.
- Keep a visible turn order in the VTT or chat.
- Take breaks every hour; screens are more tiring.
- Do a tech check in session zero.
Hybrid tables
Some players in the room, some remote? Put a microphone in the middle of the table, point a camera at the map, and let everyone roll where the others can see: shared roll links and screenshots of the dice app both work.
