Which dice do tabletop RPGs use?
Most fantasy RPGs use the classic seven-die polyhedral set, plus the d2 (a coin flip) for quick yes/no calls. Here is where each one usually shows up in D&D 5e and similar games:
| Die | Average | Common uses |
|---|---|---|
| d4 | 2.5 | Dagger damage, Magic Missile, Bless and Guidance bonuses |
| d6 | 3.5 | Fireball (8d6), Sneak Attack, shortsword damage, rolling ability scores |
| d8 | 4.5 | Longsword and rapier damage, Cure Wounds, cleric and rogue hit dice |
| d10 | 5.5 | Heavy crossbow, Fire Bolt, fighter hit dice, percentile pairs |
| d12 | 6.5 | Greataxe damage, barbarian hit dice |
| d20 | 10.5 | Attack rolls, ability checks, saving throws, initiative |
| d100 | 50.5 | Percentile tables, wild magic, Call of Cthulhu skill checks |
New to the set? The D&D dice guide explains each die, and dice probability shows why 2d6 and 1d12 feel so different.
Advantage, keep and drop, explained
Keep and drop modes change which dice count. The roller applies them to one pool: the one you typed in notation or, when you build the roll by tapping, the pool with the most dice (ties go to the bigger die). That matches how the Rollune app handles modes.
- Advantage (
2d20kh1): roll two d20s, keep the higher. The average rises from 10.5 to about 13.8. - Disadvantage (
2d20kl1): keep the lower. The average falls to about 7.2. - Drop lowest (
4d6dl1): the classic way to roll ability scores, averaging about 12.2. - Keep highest N: useful for dice-pool games and homebrew rules like "roll 3d20, keep the best".

Why roll online instead of with real dice?
Physical dice are part of the fun, but a digital roller helps when you are playing online, when someone forgot their bag, when a spell needs eight d6 at once, or when you want exact math on the table. Many groups use both: real d20s for tension, and a digital roller for big damage pools and GM rolls.
This page is a free preview of the dice tool in the Rollune app. The app adds saved presets, rolls linked to your characters' stats, custom dice sizes, theme packs and a built-in soundboard, all offline.
