Ability scores and modifiers in D&D 5e

Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma: six numbers that describe your hero. Here's what they do and how the modifier works.

By the Rollune team Updated 1 min read

In short

Your ability modifier is (score − 10) ÷ 2, rounded down: 10–11 is +0, 12–13 is +1, 14–15 is +2, 16–17 is +3, 18–19 is +4, 20 is +5. You add the modifier, not the score, to checks, saving throws, attacks and damage.

Score to modifier

Score Modifier Score Modifier
1 −5 16–17 +3
2–3 −4 18–19 +4
4–5 −3 20–21 +5
6–7 −2 22–23 +6
8–9 −1 24–25 +7
10–11 +0 26–27 +8
12–13 +1 28–29 +9
14–15 +2 30 +10

Formula: modifier = floor((score − 10) ÷ 2). The Rollune app and our character sheet creator use exactly this.

The six abilities

Ability Measures Used for
Strength (STR) physical power melee attacks and damage, Athletics, carrying
Dexterity (DEX) agility, reflexes AC, initiative, ranged and finesse attacks, Stealth, Acrobatics
Constitution (CON) endurance hit points, concentration saves
Intelligence (INT) reasoning, memory wizard spells, Arcana, History, Investigation
Wisdom (WIS) perception, insight cleric/druid/ranger spells, Perception, Insight, Survival
Charisma (CHA) force of personality bard/paladin/sorcerer/warlock spells, Persuasion, Deception

Where the modifier goes

  • Ability checks: d20 + modifier (+ proficiency if proficient in the skill).
  • Saving throws: d20 + modifier (+ proficiency if your class grants it). See saving throws explained.
  • Attacks: d20 + STR or DEX modifier + proficiency.
  • Damage: weapon die + the same modifier.
  • Spell save DC: 8 + proficiency + spellcasting modifier.

Odd scores

An odd score gives the same modifier as the even number below it (15 and 14 are both +2). Odd scores are worth keeping if you expect a +1 increase soon, from a feat or level-up.

Primary abilities by class

FAQ

Questions, answered

Still curious? The app's help section and store listing have more.

How do you calculate an ability modifier?

Subtract 10 from the ability score, divide by 2 and round down. A score of 15 gives (15 − 10) ÷ 2 = 2.5, rounded down to +2.

What is the maximum ability score in 5e?

Player characters normally cap at 20. Some magic items and epic features go higher; the table goes up to 30 (+10).

Which ability is best?

It depends on your class. Constitution helps everyone (hit points and concentration), and Dexterity improves AC and initiative.
