Proficiency bonus is +2 at levels 1–4, +3 at 5–8, +4 at 9–12, +5 at 13–16 and +6 at 17–20. Add it to attacks with proficient weapons, skills and tools you're proficient in, proficient saving throws, and your spell attack and spell save DC.
The table
| Level | Proficiency bonus |
|---|---|
| 1–4 | +2 |
| 5–8 | +3 |
| 9–12 | +4 |
| 13–16 | +5 |
| 17–20 | +6 |
It's based on your total character level, including all classes if you multiclass.
What it applies to
- Attack rolls with weapons you're proficient in, and spell attacks.
- Ability checks using skills or tools you're proficient in.
- Saving throws you're proficient in (two from your class).
- Spell save DC: 8 + proficiency + spellcasting modifier.
It does not apply to damage rolls or initiative (unless a feature says so).
Expertise
Rogues, bards and some others gain expertise: double proficiency bonus on chosen skills. A level 5 rogue with Dex +4 and expertise in Stealth has +4 + 6 = +10.
Common mistakes
- Adding proficiency to damage. (Don't.)
- Forgetting to raise it at level 5, 9, 13 and 17.
- Adding it to saves your class isn't proficient in.
The character sheet creator updates proficiency and proficient saves automatically when you change level.
