Saving throws explained

A dragon exhales, a trap springs, a wizard casts Hold Person. Saving throws are how your character resists. Here's how they work.

In short

A saving throw is d20 + the relevant ability modifier + your proficiency bonus if you're proficient in that save. You succeed if you meet or beat the DC. Each class is proficient in two saves. Spell save DC = 8 + proficiency bonus + spellcasting modifier.

The formula

Saving throw = d20 + ability modifier + proficiency bonus (if proficient) vs a Difficulty Class (DC).

Six saves exist, one per ability. The most common are Dexterity (dodging explosions and traps), Constitution (poison, concentration) and Wisdom (charm and fear).

Save proficiencies by class

Class Proficient saves
Barbarian Strength, Constitution
Bard Dexterity, Charisma
Cleric Wisdom, Charisma
Druid Intelligence, Wisdom
Fighter Strength, Constitution
Monk Strength, Dexterity
Paladin Wisdom, Charisma
Ranger Strength, Dexterity
Rogue Dexterity, Intelligence
Sorcerer Constitution, Charisma
Warlock Wisdom, Charisma
Wizard Intelligence, Wisdom

In the character sheet creator, tick your two proficient saves and the bonuses update automatically as you level.

Spell save DC

When you force a save, the target rolls against 8 + your proficiency bonus + your spellcasting modifier. A level 5 wizard with Intelligence 18 (+4) has DC 8 + 3 + 4 = 15.

Concentration

Taking damage while concentrating on a spell requires a Constitution save: DC 10 or half the damage taken, whichever is higher. Constitution save proficiency (or the War Caster feat) helps casters a lot.

Death saving throws

At 0 hit points you're unconscious and roll a death save at the start of each turn:

  • 10 or higher: success. 9 or lower: failure.
  • 3 successes: you're stable. 3 failures: your character dies.
  • Natural 20: you regain 1 hit point. Natural 1: two failures.
  • Taking damage at 0 HP causes a failure (a critical hit causes two).

Any healing brings you back up. More on hit points and hit dice.

Roll it

Roll a save as 1d20 plus your bonus in the d20 roller, or arm the stat in the Rollune app so the modifier is added automatically.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Still curious? The app's help section and store listing have more.

How do you calculate a saving throw bonus?

Ability modifier + proficiency bonus if proficient. A level 1 wizard with Wisdom 14 (+2) and Wisdom save proficiency has +4 (+2 modifier, +2 proficiency).

What is the difference between a saving throw and an ability check?

An ability check is something you attempt (pick a lock). A saving throw resists something done to you (a poison, a spell, a trap).

How do death saves work?

At 0 hit points, roll a d20 each turn: 10 or higher is a success, 9 or lower a failure. Three successes stabilize you, three failures and you die. A natural 20 restores 1 HP; a natural 1 counts as two failures.
