What is a d4?
A d4 is a four-sided pyramid (tetrahedron). Because it has no top face, you read the number printed at the top point or along the bottom edge, depending on the set. It is famously painful to step on, and it is the smallest die in the standard RPG set.
Where the d4 shows up
- Weapons: dagger, dart, sling, club and whip damage.
- Spells: Magic Missile deals 1d4+1 per dart; Healing Word heals 1d4 plus your modifier in the 2014 rules.
- Bonuses: Bless and Guidance add 1d4 to a d20 roll, so on average they're worth +2.5.
- Hit dice: older editions used d4 hit dice for wizards and sorcerers.
D4 odds
Each face comes up 25% of the time and the average is 2.5. Two d4 average 5, with 5 the most common total (25%). Three Magic Missile darts (3d4+3) deal between 6 and 15 damage, 10.5 on average.
Rolling d4 bonuses
To roll an attack with Bless, add one d20 and one d4 plus your modifier, for example 1d20+1d4+5. In the Rollune app you can save that as a preset for the whole fight.
