What is a d12?
A d12 is a twelve-sided dodecahedron with pentagon faces. It averages 6.5 and has the widest flat range of any standard damage die, which makes it perfect for big, swingy weapon hits.
Where the d12 matters
- Greataxe and lance damage:
1d12+3averages 9.5. - Barbarian hit dice: the biggest hit die in 5e, 7 fixed hit points per level.
- Random tables: 12 months, 12 hours on a clock face, 12 zodiac signs, 12 party rumors.
- Some spells, such as the Toll the Dead cantrip against a wounded target.
1d12 or 2d6?
Both top out at 12 but behave very differently. 1d12 is flat (every result about 8.3%) and averages 6.5, while 2d6 clusters around 7 and can never roll a 1. That's the difference between a greataxe and a greatsword: same maximum, different feel. Details in dice probability explained.
