What is a d8?
A d8 is an eight-sided octahedron that looks like two pyramids joined at the base. It averages 4.5 and is the go-to die for versatile one-handed weapons and mid-sized spells.
Common d8 rolls in 5e
| Roll | Average | Used for |
|---|---|---|
1d8+3 | 7.5 | Longsword, rapier, warhammer or battleaxe with +3 Strength or Dexterity |
2d8+3 | 12 | The same weapon on a critical hit |
1d8+3 | 7.5 | Cure Wounds (2014 rules) with a +3 spellcasting modifier |
1d8 | 4.5 | Hit die for clerics, druids, bards, monks, rogues and warlocks |
Critical hits with a d8 weapon
On a critical hit you roll all the attack's damage dice twice, then add your modifier once. A +3 longsword crit is 2d8+3: 5 to 19 damage, 12 on average. More in critical hits and fumbles.
Level-up hit points
When a d8 class levels up you either roll 1d8 and add your Constitution modifier, or take the fixed value of 5. Over many levels the average is almost the same, so the choice comes down to how much risk your table enjoys. See hit points and hit dice.
