What is a d6?
The d6 is the familiar cube numbered 1 to 6, found in nearly every board game. In tabletop RPGs it covers small weapons, Sneak Attack, many spells and the most popular way to roll ability scores. Several whole systems run on it: Powered by the Apocalypse games roll 2d6, and Shadowrun and Vampire-style games count successes on pools of d6 or d10.
Popular d6 rolls
| Roll | Range | Average | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
1d6 | 1–6 | 3.5 | Shortsword, Sneak Attack at level 1 |
2d6 | 2–12 | 7 | Greatsword, PbtA moves (10+ is a full success) |
3d6 | 3–18 | 10.5 | Old-school ability scores, GURPS checks |
4d6dl1 | 3–18 | 12.24 | 5e ability scores, drop the lowest die |
8d6 | 8–48 | 28 | Fireball and Lightning Bolt |
Why 2d6 feels different from 1d12
One d6 is flat: every face has a 1 in 6 chance. Add more dice and the results bunch in the middle. On 2d6, a 7 comes up 1 time in 6, while a 2 or a 12 comes up only 1 time in 36. That bell curve is why systems built on 2d6 feel predictable and swingy games use a single big die. See dice probability explained.
How to roll several d6
Tap the d6 as many times as you need; the badge shows the count. For ability scores choose Drop low with 4 dice, or type 4d6dl1. For Fireball type 8d6. In the Rollune app you can save it as a preset and reroll it in one tap.
